New York

New York is one of the most popular cities of the world and broadly draws the picture of USA on its own. It is the most populous city in the middle Atlantic state of USA and the center of the New York Metropolitan Area. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of Ontario (NW), and the province of Quebec (N).

It is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world, as of 2011 there are an estimated 8,244,910 residents. Ethnic diversity of New Yorkers is probably the most intense in the whole world.

One can easily identify significant population groups from every single recognized country in the world. 36% of the New york’s population is foreign born, and around 800 recognizable languages are spoken here.

New York City experiences a humid subtropical climate. Winters are cold and damp, spring and autumn range from chilly to warm, with low humidity and summers are typically hot and humid. The city receives rainfall almost throughout the year and snowfall in winters.

New York City is composed of five boroughs.

1.       Manhattan
2.       The Bronx
3.       Brooklyn
4.       Queens
5.       Staten Island

Manhattan: Manhattan is the most popular of the five boroughs and is what one pictures when we say “New York”. It is the heartbeat of the city and is considered epicenter of commerce, finance and culture for not just New York, but the whole of USA and at times the world. It is one of the most celebrated places of the world and is a benchmark for all modern cities featuring all aspects of business centers, landmarks, tourist attractions, museums, and universities. It is home of both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many major radio, television, and telecommunications companies in the United States are based here, as well as news, magazine, book, and other media publishers.

Along with the main island it consists of smaller islands like Roosevelt Island, Randall's Island, Wards Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, Ellis Island (part of it), Mill Rock, “U Thant Island and Marble Hill. It is one of the most densely populated areas of the country and possibly the world. Skyscrapers like Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, World Trade Centre (New), etc populate the downtown area of Manhattan. Central Park in Manhattan is a park with 6 mile perimeter consisting of walking tracks, skating rings and a wildlife sanctuary. The other popular places in Manhattan are the Wall Street, Times Square, American Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Madison Square garden are to name a few.

Brooklyn: Brooklyn is the second largest borough of New York and the most populated one. It used to be a city on its own till 1898, when it was included in the New York City. Brooklyn has several places of attraction like Prospect Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Coney Island and New York Transit Museum. It is home to thousands of immigrant families from Europe, Asia, South America, etc. The estimated population of Brooklyn is around 2500000.

Queens: Queens is the largest borough of New York with the second largest population among all the boroughs. It is one of the most ethnically diverse urban areas of the world where close to half the population consists of immigrants speaking over a hundred languages. The two major airports of new York – JFK international Airport and LaGuardia, are in Queens. The approximate population of Queens is more than two million.

The Bronx: The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City. Coextensive with Bronx County, it was the last of the 62 counties of New York State to be incorporated. Located north of Manhattan and Queens, and south of Westchester County, the Bronx is the only borough that is located primarily on the mainland (a very small portion of Manhattan, the Marble Hill neighborhood, is physically located on the mainland, due to the rerouting of the Harlem River in 1897). The Bronx's population is 1,400,761 according to the 2010 United States Census.

Staten Island: Staten Island is the least populated borough of New York and is completely an island body. Historic Richmond Town museum and Staten Island zoo are attractions on this island. With population close to five hundred thousand, it is the only borough with a majority of non Hispanic white people. One fifth of the population consists of immigrants/foreign born residents. Along with the main there are small islands like the Isle of Meadows, Prall's Island, Shooters Island, Swinburne Island and Hoffman Island.
